How it works

From "what's that noise?" to fixed

The check takes about a minute. Here's what happens after.

  1. Step 1: Answer 4 questions

Tell us what the car is doing, the details, how long it's been happening, and any warning signs.

  2. Step 2: See the likely cause

Get the most likely causes, how urgent it is, what to do right now, and what a diagnosis costs.

  3. Step 3: Send it or call

Send your results to the shop, or call us. We'll talk it through and set a time to bring the car in.

  4. Step 4: We test, you approve

We test the car at our Holland shop and give you the price. No work starts until you say go.

This check is a general guide, not a diagnosis or repair quote. We need to inspect your car to confirm the problem and price.

Typical chain shop: Fees and credits vary

  • Price and approval

Tough Knuckles: You get the price before any work, and we call before doing anything extra

Typical chain shop: Upsells at the counter are common

"Typical chain shop" describes common practices in general, not any specific business. Every shop is different.

Car check questions

Straight answers about how this check works, what a diagnosis costs, and what happens next.

Is this online car check a diagnosis?
No. It is a general guide based on what you tell it, not a diagnosis or a repair quote. It points you to the most common causes and tells you how urgent the problem usually is, but only a hands-on inspection can confirm what is wrong with your car. Many different problems share the same symptoms, and the check cannot see, hear, or test your vehicle.
How accurate are the results?
The results list the causes we see most often for each symptom, so they are a good starting point — but they can be wrong for your car. Age, mileage, past repairs, and add-on parts all change the picture. Treat the result as "what to check first," not as the answer. Our diagnosis tests the actual parts so you only pay to fix what is really broken.
How much does a diagnosis cost at Tough Knuckles?
A standard diagnosis is $75. An electrical diagnosis is $125. If you have us do the repair, the diagnostic fee is credited toward your final bill. If you decide not to have us do the repair, the diagnostic fee is still due, because it covers the testing we already did. You always get the repair price before any work starts.
What's the difference between the standard and electrical diagnosis?
The electrical diagnosis ($125) covers no-starts, batteries that keep dying, charging and alternator problems, starters, wiring faults, blown fuses, and electrical accessories. These take more specialized testing, like measuring battery drain and voltage drop. The standard diagnosis ($75) covers check-engine lights, brakes, noises, leaks, cooling, AC and heat, suspension, and drivability problems. If you are not sure which you need, call us and we will tell you before you come in.
Is it safe to drive my car to the shop?
This check can't tell you whether your car is safe to drive. The urgency on your result is a general guide only. If the car has died, may die again, or you aren't sure, call us before you drive it and we'll talk through whether a tow is the safer choice. "Stop driving" means don't. Never drive with smoke, a burning smell, a strong gas smell, a temperature gauge in the red, a soft brake pedal, or a flashing check-engine light. If you are ever unsure, call us at (419) 392-5926 and describe what the car is doing.
What happens after I send my results to the shop?
Your answers go to us as a service request. We call you back during shop hours (Monday–Friday, 9 AM–6 PM) to talk it through and set a drop-off time. Sending your results does not book a repair or approve any work. Nothing is repaired until we have tested the car, given you a price, and you have said yes.
Can you give me a repair price from my answers?
Not an exact one. The same symptom can be a quick fix or a major repair, and parts prices vary by vehicle. After our diagnosis, you get a firm price for your car. For a rough idea before you call, try our repair cost estimator — but that is a range, not a quote.
How long does a diagnosis take?
Many diagnoses take an hour or two. A quick battery and charging test is usually under an hour. Problems that come and go — like a battery that dies every few days or a light that only flickers in the rain — can take longer, because we need to catch the fault while it is happening. We tell you up front if we need to keep the car longer.
Do you come to me, or do I bring the car in?
All work is done at our shop at 932 Holland Park Blvd, Holland, OH 43528. We do not offer mobile or roadside service. If the car is not safe to drive, arrange a tow to the shop — call us first and we can help you decide.
My problem isn't listed. What should I do?
Pick the closest match to see general advice, or skip the check and call us at (419) 392-5926. You can also send a request from our contact page — pick "Not sure what's wrong" and describe what the car is doing in your own words.
Do I need an appointment?
Walk-ins are welcome for a quick check or to talk through a problem. For anything that ties up a bay, please call ahead so we can set aside time and, if needed, have a part ready. For no-starts, call and we will tell you the fastest way to get the car to us.
Is my information kept private?
Your answers stay in your browser unless you choose to send them to us. If you send them, we use your information only to respond to your request and help with your car. We never sell it. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Do you offer a military discount?
Yes — 15% military discount on labor for active duty and veterans. Bring your ID and mention it when you drop off the car. It applies to labor, not parts.
